Scottish Landmarks Challenge 2007
A touring and photographic event for members of the MZ Riders Club and their friends loosely based on the Tour of Britain Rally. The objective is to encourage you to use your MZ (or other motorcycle) to tour Scotland, either on your own or in company. Basically, it’s an excuse to go for a series of long rides on your bike.
To prove you have visited the various Landmarks, 27 in total, you will be required to take a photograph which clearly shows your motorcycle at the scene. If for some reason the Landmark is closed, or otherwise unavailable for whatever reason, the organisers will permit the substitution of a photograph of your motorcycle in front of a nearby road-sign which includes the name of the Landmark.
The Challenge will run from May 1st 2007 to April 25th 2008. You may start at any Landmark and do as many or as few as you wish, also any number of machines may be used during the Challenge, but they must all comply with the usual legal requirements for use on the public highway.
As this is the inaugural event the level of difficulty is not too high. The Landmarks include castles, bridges, monuments, follies, pubs and a distillery. Most are readily accessible from main roads and many are signposted, so should be located with no great difficulty. They are, however, spread throughout the country, so the challenge is in their distance apart, making the difficulty in visiting as many as possible in the course of the year.
Each Landmark is worth 2 points, with 1 point being awarded should you submit a photograph of a nearby road-sign instead. Like the MZRC Rally Award Scheme your points are doubled should you visit the Landmark on an MZ.
However, awards will be allocated on the basis of how many Landmarks you manage to visit in the course of the Challenge. The points tally is to allow for a ranking of those completing the event, as it will obviously be more difficult to complete the Challenge on a TS250 than on a Pan European. Awards will be allocated as follows:
Platinum : all Landmarks visited (no errors or substitutions) Gold : all Landmarks visited (some errors or substitutions) Silver : 18 to 26 Landmarks Bronze : 9 to 17 Landmarks Standard : 1 to 8 Landmarks
In addition, there will be an award for the best photograph submitted. This will be something which makes the organisers laugh, or otherwise stands out from the rest. Other awards may be considered at the organisers’ discretion e.g. Best Excuse for Not Getting a Decent Photograph, Hard-Luck Story, Most Breakdowns in the Course of Completing the Challenge etc.
All entry forms and photographs MUST BE RETURNED BY APRIL 25th 2008 to the organisers for marking. The results will be announced at the annual Scottish Rally in May and thereafter a full list of results will be posted on this website and provided to all entrants on request. Awards will be posted out no later than the first week in June.
This Challenge will entail considerable time and effort to get the best out of it, not withstanding the mileage that will be covered if you decide to try to do all of the Landmarks. The Standard Award can be achieved easily in a couple of weekends, whereas to visit all of the Landmarks will require both time and dedication. But the enjoyment and satisfaction will, hopefully, be well worth it. Should you be interested in attempting the Landmark Challenge then you need to fill in an application form (contact me by email) for an entry form. There will be an entry fee of £5 to take part, with the money put towards the eventual awards. I would gladly run the event for free, but then you’d have nothing to show for your participation when it was over. Send the completed application form back to me, enclosing a cheque for £5, and you will receive your entry form and full details of the 27 Landmarks. Photographs can be submitted as hard copy prints or on a CD-rom, whichever is most convenient for you. If submitting prints please say whether you would like them back or not. It is assumed that all photographs submitted can be published on the Section website at the end of the Challenge. Remember, there will be an award for best photograph, so try and be a bit creative where possible in your choice of shot.
REMEMBER YOU CAN DO AS MANY OR AS FEW AS YOU WISH!
To take part and to receive your Application Form you should contact me. My contact details are on the Homepage.
